The D2 tool steel, also called by its german grade number 1.2379 is widely used in the industrial sector to produce high-duty cutting tools. In order to supply the best possible quality, we decided to work with the Böhler K110, produced in austrian and german mills well-known for their high technology and their high production quality level.
This grade has a decent toughness and an excellent abrasive wear resistance. Those abilities make  it a good choice for knifemakers who want to produce outdoor knives. Sharpening is not that simple when you're not used to this steel but its edge retention capacity make it a good choice for hunting or sports knives. Even though it contains a relatively high chromium rate (12%), this tool steel is not considered as stainless, especially because of its very high carbon content (1,6%). Sometimes designated as semi-stainless, it only has relative corrosion resistance capacities. For an outdoor use of a D2 knife, you will need to take care your blade in order to avoid any inadvertent oxidation. Concerning the heat treatment of the 1.2379, it is quite easy to proceed with oil or forced air quenching. We strongly advise to use heat treatment foil to avoid any scale and decarb. Subzero quenching is also possible. With a proper heat treatment, you can reach 60-61 Hrc
