Practical assembly system with screws and cylinder nuts.
Designed and developed by Robert Waldorf Loveless, the world-famous American knifemaker, this assembly system will perfectly replace the traditional rivets with rosette to assemble the handles of knives with a fixed full tang blade, also known as flat sole.
The assembly becomes easier, more precise and the tightening by screw of the handle plates better controlled by avoiding the possible incidents due to the repeated hammering of the rivets.
Principle of use.
This Loveless screw assembly system is done without the use of a hammer.
This screw system consists of a stainless steel screw Ø4 mm x 40 mm (0.16 x 1.6in) long and two stainless steel cylinder nuts Ø7 mm x 6 mm (0.28 x 0.24in) long.
After drilling the handle plates for the screw, ream the holes in the plates to a diameter slightly smaller than that of the Ø7 mm (0.28in) nuts to a maximum depth of 6 mm (0.24in) to make the housings for the two cylinder nuts. The two cylinder nuts must be held sufficiently to prevent them from turning when tightened, but not too tightly to avoid undue stress on the handle pads.
Screw in one of the cylinders until it reaches the screw head, then engage the assembly on one side of the handle.
Then position the second cylinder on the other side of the handle and tighten with a 3 mm (0.12in) hexagonal key until it touches and lock the assembly moderately but firmly.
All that remains is to cut off the screw heads on one side and the protruding part of the screw on the other side of the handle, sand and polish the assembly for a strong and permanent fit.
This practical Loveless assembly system can be used to assemble all types of knife handles up to 40 mm (1.6in) thick.

After sanding and polishing, this Loveless stainless steel screw and nut system has the appearance of classic rivets with increased strength to avoid any risk of breakage due to an impact, for example.
The Loveless stainless steel screw and nut system is particularly recommended for the assembly of knives subjected to a hostile and humid environment such as survival, bushcraft or nautical equipments.
