Japanese Takefu coreless stainless Damascus for high end knife blades.
Takefu coreless Damascus - VG10 + VG2 is a concentrate of Japanese know-how in metallurgy. Takefu Special Steel, renowned for the quality of its steel grades, offers to knifemakers an exceptional stainless damascus steel, achieving the best results both in terms of technical and aesthetic qualities. Takefu Coreless stainless damascus steel combines two exceptional stainless steel grades that are well known to knife makers: VG10 steel and VG2 steel.
A pattern to create by hammering the blade !
This grade of Takefu Coreless stainless steel damascus has no "pattern" to speak of: it is basically reminiscent of the straight, uniform lines found on Suminagashi VG10. The cutler will need to hammer the blade to create the pattern, using a cold hammer. The points of impact will deform the layers of "soft" steel to create unique, water-drop patterns.
A fine blend of VG10 and VG2 stainless steels.
Takefu coreless Damascus stainless steel is made of VG10 and VG2 steel, grades manufactured from raw materials with low impurity content. Their composition guarantees excellent mechanical properties: impact resistance, bending resistance, flexibility and ductility of the blades. These two grades also have a high carbon content, which provides excellent cutting quality and facilitates sharpening operations. Thus, the Takefu coreless Damascus - VG10 + VG2 is particularly suitable for the manufacture of kitchen knife blades. It is also suitable for all types of projects, for both fixed and folding knives.
Heat treatment and etching of Takefu coreless Japanese Damascus.
The Takefu coreless Damascus stainless steel should be austenitized and tempered in the same way as Takefu VG10 steel. You can find all our recommendations for the heat treatment of this exceptional grade on our technical data sheet, freely available for consultation and download. Thus, Takefu coreless Japanese Damascus should be austenitized between 1050 and 1100°C for about fifteen minutes, in air or oil. For best results in hardness and ductility, we recommend tempering between 150 and 250°C, in two cycles of two hours each.
Takefu coreless - VG10 + VG2 is a stainless damascus. To etch it, it will be necessary to use acids with sufficient etching abilities. Therefore, to reveal the patterns of this grade, on a properly degreased and cleaned blade, you can use either hydrochloric acid diluted in water (recommended concentrations: 15% HCL / 85% H2O) or suractivated iron perchloride, available on our website.
