From the Norse saga Volsunga, Fafnir was a fearless dwarf of formidable strength. In charge of guarding his father's house, Hreidmar, and the treasure it contained, he took on the appearance of a dragon to better defend his gold and jewels. Still according to Norse mythology, Fafnir spits fire and poisonous miasma to prevent anyone from approaching his father's property, thus inspiring terror and respect.
