Vulcanized fiber is a composite material made from cellular materials: cellulose fibers and/or cotton fibers. Its manufacture follows a particular process, which makes it a particularly interesting material for the knifemaking industry: the vulcanized fiber is indeed a composite material which shines by its stability, and its extremely high mechanical resistance. Used as a spacer on a knife handle, it limits the risk of breakage of precious materials, such as mammoth ivory or horn.
