A practical screw and nut assembly system.
Designed and developed by Robert Waldorf Loveless, the world-famous American knife maker, this assembly system replaces the traditional rivets with rosette to assemble knife handles.
The assembly becomes easier, more precise and the tightening by screw of the handle plates better controlled by avoiding possible incidents due to an unfortunate hammer blow at the rivets.
Application of Loveless screws.
This screw assembly system does not require a hammer.
Consisting of a Ø4 mm x 40 mm (0.16 x 1.6in) long screw and two Ø7 mm x 6 mm (0.28 x 0.24in) long threaded cylinders, a small Phillips screwdriver is all that is needed for assembly.
After drilling the handle plates for the screw, drill the plates again to a diameter slightly smaller than that of the Ø7 mm (0.28in) nuts with a maximum depth of 6 mm (0.24in) to make the housings for the two cylinders.
Screw one of the cylinders until it comes to rest on the screw head, then engage the assembly on one side of the handle.
Then position the second cylinder on the other side of the handle and tighten it with a Phillips screwdriver until it touches the screw head and lock the assembly moderately but firmly.
All that remains is to cut off the screw head and the protruding part on the other side of the handle, sand and polish the whole assembly for a sturdy and permanent fit.
This practical Loveless assembly system can be used to assemble all types of knife handles up to 40 mm (1.6in) thick.
The aesthetics are also important.
After sanding and polishing, these Loveless brass screws and nuts in the same shades have the appearance of perfectly circular rivets without the risk of breakage due to an impact, for example.
