Z20C13 stainless steel is perfect as spring steel and many other applications
X20Cr13 is a martensitic stainless steel very close to the composition of X46Cr13. Commonly called 420, this stainless steel has numerous applications. In industry, it is used to make blades that do not require a high degree of hardness but that require excellent resistance to corrosion. Example: household chopper blade Its very low carbon content does not allow it to become very hard, however it hardly rusts.
X20Cr13, a steel for folding knife springs
This low carbon content has another advantage: your parts will retain some flexibility after quenching. This is why AISI 420 stainless steel is used by knife-makers as spring steel in the manufacture of folding knives. This applies to a forced notch as well as a liner-lock.
The Z20C13 stainless steel can be used without quenching depending on the use:
To achieve all these mechanical and anti-corrosion properties, the 420 or 1.4021 must be quenched and tempered. However, some knife-makers use this material in thin sheets in the annealed state to make their liners. The very low carbon content does not cause any corrosion problems even if it is not quenched.
