Borax : the essential ally for successful forge welding.

Whether it's for making Damascus or sandwich steel kits, borax is the essential ally for the successful welding of several metals together.
Borax removes scale and impurities from heated steels while lowering the melting temperature of the metals (known as fluxing), enabling perfect contact and forge welding without the risk of weld failure.

An abundant mineral known since Antiquity.

Borax, also known as "sodium borate" in mineralogy, is a natural mineral extracted from a rock (evaporite) found in abundance at the sites of ancient dried-up alkaline lakes or their shores when the water has evaporated, leaving the alkaline sodium salts in compact masses.
Known and mined since ancient times, the ore is refined by evaporating the water, crystallising with water, centrifuging and finally drying.
Crystallisation is carried out using water, and involves extracting the sodium borate crystals from the insoluble evaporite matrix, retaining only the pure crystals.
Depending on the method of crystallisation used and the degree of purity obtained, the product has been known in chemistry as "sodium tetraborate decahydrate" or, more commonly, "Borax" since the Middle Ages.
Despite refining treatments, borax remains a 100% natural product.

Borax powder: a mineral with exceptional natural properties.

Used as a pickling agent by goldsmiths in Asia and Persia, borax powder has many properties that are put to good use in the glassmaking industry, where it is used in the composition of glasses such as Pyrex®, in ceramics for glazing earthenware, and in porcelain, where it increases the fluidity of glazes.
But its most remarkable property, 'fluxing', is particularly useful in the field of metallurgy, where it lowers the melting temperature of metals, thereby reducing the temperature required for welding metals at the forge.

Borax powder: essential for cutlers' forges.

As well as being a flux, borax powder is a powerful stripper, removing impurities and slag from the steel (scale) and preventing oxidation at the heart of the weld.
You've got it: no forge welding without borax powder.
This rule, which applies to all types of weld, is particularly recommended when creating damascus or sandwich steels.
Sprinkling borax powder on previously heated parts in order to assemble them instantly forms a protective film that spreads out and absorbs impurities and slag. This film also prevents the formation of oxides, protecting the core of the weld from oxidation.
In other words, borax plays an essential role in the creation of Damascus steel kits, sandwich steels and all other welds produced at the forge.

Borax powder: from the nuclear industry to the kitchen.

The remarkable properties of borax could not go unnoticed in a wide range of applications.
It can be found in the spray water used in nuclear reactors, in electronic components, in cement and concrete, in food (preservative E285 in caviar) and in many other areas, from medicine to the home.
Used in domestic applications as a detergent, cleaner, disinfectant and even to chase away invasive ants, borax powder never ceases to amaze.

Suitable packaging.

At Eurotechni, we offer borax powder in 1 kg pots for economical and controlled use.
Borax for industrial use does not go out of date and retains all its properties if it is stored under the recommended conditions, particularly away from humidity.
