DarkMai multi-layer sandwich damascus knifemaking steel by Baker Forge.
Using 80crv2 carbon steel as the core for this assembly, the Baker Forge workshops assembled a first layer of Coppermascus steel, then a second layer of 80crv2 steel for an original "Black-Out" appearance after finishing.
Using a novel fusion welding method developed by Coy Baker, the multi-layer DarkMai sandwich knifemaking steel by Baker Forge demonstrated superior metal bonding compared to traditional fusion welding methods.
Following a series of stresses and tests, this welding method appears to be revolutionary, giving the assemblies produced superior resistance, particularly to shear tests.
Tough as nails.
An innovative welding technique for an innovative material.
In 2020, Coy Baker, the young founder of the Baker Forge & Tool workshops, developed an original fusion welding method that enabled him to assemble copper and carbon steel to great aesthetic effect.
Coy Baker's secret welding method has not only made it possible to achieve a seemingly improbable bond between materials, but also, and above all, to obtain a final material with much greater resistance than that obtained by conventional fusion welding, particularly to shearing, which he has called "Coppermascus".
A fusion welding technique that allows for all kinds of daring.
On the strength of this success, both technical and aesthetic, the Baker Forge workshops have extended this process to other creations using materials as diverse as bronze, stainless steel and pure nickel, still based on carbon steel, resulting in alloys that are just as resistant and just as artistic and original in appearance.
DarkMai steel bars by Baker Forge: Coppermascus GoMai alloy and 80crv2 carbon steel.
This unique alloy is the result of assembling GoMai-patterned Coppermascus on each side of 80crv2 carbon steel.
The contrast between the copper and the 80crv2 steel, after revelation and final polishing, gives a truly exceptional "Black-Out" appearance.
Etching of DarkMai knifemaking steel by Baker Forge.
DarkMai knifemaking steel by Baker Forge, a member of the Damascus family of steels, requires a chemical treatment at the end of the machining process.
This treatment enhances the aesthetics of the part by etching the different layers of material, their colours and contrasts.
The special feature of Baker Forge alloys lies in the alloying of soft materials with extremely hard steels.
Therefore, etching by chemical treatment must be carried out with extreme vigilance and perfect mastery.
To avoid any mishandling, Baker Forge has developed Gator Piss, a special etchant with a mixture specifically designed for the perfectly successful etching of Baker Forge alloys.
DarkMai cutlery steel by Baker Forge in custom sizes.
Our damascus steel bars by Baker Forge are perfectly suited to your knife-making project.
Sold cut to size, they are supplied annealed and ready to use.
With a width of 50 mm (1.97in) and a thickness of 3 mm (0.12in), each bar is ground to obtain 100% clean steel.
