Carbon steel made in Europe :
XC100 or 1095 is a carbon steel that is simple but essential when making knives. This steel is manufactured in Europe by Böhler-Uddeholm (UHB20C) a steel mill specialised in precision steel sheets. Their technical expertise is renowned and guarantees that this metal is of very good quality and extremely homogeneous.
Making knife blades:
XC100 (1095) steel is used to make blades that need good hardness levels and a razor sharp edge. It is especially appreciated for making cut-throat razors. With its low alloy content, the XC100 has low ductility and therefore selective quenching is recommended to overcome this. This grade also permits very good quench lines to be obtained (Hamon).
It is perfect for forging Damascus steel:
When used with 15N20 or pure nickel, it allows very beautifully contrasted Damascus blades to be made that conserve good cutting properties.
Delivery condition and heat treatment of the XC100 steel:
This cold rolled steel has a very good surface finish. Like the majority of our grades, this reference is delivered annealed so that it is easier to work. It then requires various heat treatment processes for it to acquire the required mechanical properties. Due to the absence of chrome in the batch available, we recommend quenching with water or accelerated oil for optimum hardness results.
